Soil Health Test Kit Workshop
On Friday, October 10, at 2:30pm, at the West Tisbury Library, join us for a Soil Health Test Kit Workshop with Sam Corcoran, PhD, manager of the UMass Extension Soil and Plant Nutrient Testing Lab. Healthy soil supports healthy plants and healthy ecosystems, but knowing how to measure soil health can feel complicated. In this workshop, we’ll introduce the UMass Soil Health Test Kit, a simple, hands-on toolkit for farmers, gardeners, and land managers. Participants will see demonstrations of quick field tests, including measurements of soil structure, compaction, water infiltration, pH, and biological activity. We will discuss how to interpret the results, keeping in mind the unique sandy soils of Martha’s Vineyard.
After the demonstration, the kit will be permanently housed at the West Tisbury Library’s “Library of Things,” so anyone with a library card can check out the items.
The goal is to provide practical tools and insights that can help you better understand your soil and guide management decisions. The workshop is open to all experience levels. Free and open the public.
Sam Corcoran is a plant and soil scientist specializing in crop production and soil health. She is also an avid home gardener.
