A collaborative program focussing on land and water conservation around West Tisbury’s treasured Great Pond. Generations of West Tisbury residents have long revered the wild oysters found in Tisbury Great Pond. In addition to being a delicious, locally harvested food, oysters play an important role in healthy ecosystems. Join the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group (MVSG) and Chilmark and West Tisbury’s Shellfish Departments to learn about the municipal oyster farm visible from shore, seeding the pond, and oyster habitat restoration. Learn about why our towns grow oysters and what oysters do for our environment. Then join Vineyard Conservation Society for a walk around Short Cove to learn about various types of land conservation and how local organizations work with landowners to preserve access, agriculture, and natural habitats.

This program is free and open to the public. It is part of a year-long aquaculture series partnership, administered by MVSG and funded by NOAA’s eeBLUE grant, to share the benefits of aquaculture with the Vineyard community.
