About the book:
In the Company of Poets: Cleaveland House Poets Anthology 2021 is the latest anthology from the Cleaveland House Poets (CHP). CHP is considered the longest continuously running poetry group in New England, begun by Dionis Coffin Riggs in 1963 in the parlor of her family home, located in West Tisbury on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard. The group continues to meet bi-weekly all year.
The anthology includes 15 poet members of CHP. One poet, included in the volume, Andrea B. Quigley, passed away in 2017. Also there are present members who were not able to participate during the pandemic, but they and past members are all listed in the “Roster of Poets.” The book allots each poet seven pages, so depending on the length of the poems submitted the number of poems printed varies from poet to poet.
Each poet has a distinct voice and the one thing all poets share is being home on Martha’s Vineyard. Subjects range widely from nature and love to current events and humor. The support each poet enjoys being a part of the group has been instrumental in developing both individual poems and their unique voice.
Cleaveland House Poets are thankful for the support from Cleaveland House owner/writer Cynthia Riggs, Island libraries, arts organizations and local newspapers which have supported poetry and allow poets to share their work both in print and aloud readings.
Books will be available soon at Bunch of Grapes, Cronigs, Edgartown Books and Featherstone Center for the Arts.
