Film to Explore Palestinian Resilience

Where Olive Trees Weep, a powerful film about the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation, will be shown at the West Tisbury library on Monday, December 2, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and will be followed by a question-and-answer period.

Using historical film footage and contemporary interviews, the film explores themes of loss, trauma, and the quest for justice with a focus on both the struggles and the resilience of the Palestinian people. Interviewees include Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. Also covered is the work of Canadian physician Dr. Gabor Maté, offering trauma-healing work for women who have survived torture in Israeli prisons.

Through documentary images, the history of land confiscation, expulsions, imprisonment, home demolitions, water deprivation, and denial of basic human rights is made real for filmgoers. The film’s title, Where Olive Trees Weep, was inspired by a line in a poem by Mahmoud Darwish, the late, revered Palestinian poet.

The screening is hosted by Expanding the Conversation, a group of Vineyarders committed to raising awareness of on-the-ground realities in Israel-Palestine and bringing about a lasting peace. The group meets at 5:30 p.m.most Mondays at the West Tisbury library.
