Concert with Nanauwe
On Saturday, August 20th, at 3:30pm, come to the West Tisbury Library for a musical concert by Nanauwe. This event is free and open to the public.
Nanauwe is an Indigenous artist from the island of Nôepe, born in 2000. She is a part of the Wôpanâak tribe, also known as the People of the First Light.
She has been singing and writing songs since she was a baby, with a voice described by the MV Times as “electric, angelic, soulful, and pure,” and her “tone is rich and bodied—almost hypnotic.” In 2020 she released her first single and music video “I Am My Spirit,” on Sept. 9. At only 20 years old, Nanauwe wrote, sang, recorded, and produced the song through her own production company, Freedom Water Music. She also edited and co-directed the “I Am My Spirit” music video. Her latest song, “Island Indigenous,” was released in April of this year, which she also wrote and produced.
In her own words, her music reflects her “connective and intuitive relationship with nature” and she draws inspiration from mama earth and Indigenous way of life. Her vision is to “lead people (especially people of color) back to an Indigenous way of life. Where everything is held sacred and close to your heart. Where we as humans know it is our duty to love and care for Mama Earth, just as she does for us. Humans are a vital and important part of the ecosystem, just as any other being, and we all need to contribute rather than be detrimental. Where we can have compassion and understanding that each soul as an individual and deserves respect and peace. Where we can truly give our gifts to the world and share them with each other in the knowing that if we are together, there is no lack. In the Indigenous way, the person who gives the most, even if they have very little, they receive the greatest honor.”
