On Thursday, June 6, at 4:30pm, at the West Tisbury Library, author Candace Cochrane will discuss her book, TautukKonik / Looking Back: A Portrait of Inuit Life in Northern Labrador, 1969–1986. Candace will discuss the making of a collaborative portrait of Inuit in photographs and stories from northern Labrador. The presentation will include discussion of the collaborative process between Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors, repatriating photographs to their source communities, and the shape-shifting character of photography itself. This event is free and open to the public.
“TautukKonik / Looking Back shows the strength of our culture. It shows the strength of family and family connection. It was strong, the way that we lived. Our culture was strong, our language was strong. And this book shows that.” — Julius (Joe) Dicker, Nain AngajukKâk / Mayor
About the author:
“During my varied career, I have worn many hats – documentary photographer, field worker, photography teacher, community developer, artist, storyteller – and probably some other things I have forgotten about. I live in Massachusetts in the winter and on the Great Northern Peninsula for 55 summers. My family has come to Martha’s Vineyard as summer residents for almost 100 years – finally selling our house a couple of years ago.” – Candace Cochrane
