Becoming a Natural Neighbor: A Talk with Angela Luckey

On Saturday, May 7th, at 1pm, please join us at the West Tisbury Library for a talk with Natural Neighbors Program Director Angela Luckey. The Natural Neighbors program promotes conservation of Martha’s Vineyard’s flora and fauna through environmental education and customized management recommendations, reshaping perceptions on what is a productive yard. Participants will learn how they can actively advocate for their natural neighbors. Angela will discuss the importance of thoughtful backyard management to increase native plant diversity, emphasizing the connections between plants, arthropods, birds, and other animals to support a balanced and dynamic system of producers and consumers. After the presentation, individuals can sign up for a free consultation with Angela to understand the specific ways that they can create habitat on their own property and increase biodiversity.

There will be 20 native plant kits to be given away at the end of the program. All attendees will be entered in a raffle to win a kit to take home! This event is free and open to the public.

Angela Luckey developed a fondness for plants and associated wildlife at an early age. As the director of the Natural Neighbors program, she encourages and educates the community on how to create and conserve vital habitat and connectivity across the island. She meets with homeowners to develop customized recommendations to help wildlife and plants move, mate, pollinate, and thrive.  Angela has a Bachelor of Science in Plant, Soil, and Insect Sciences and a Master of Science in Environmental Policy and Management.  Collectively, she has over a decade of horticultural experience, working with environmental organizations like BiodiversityWorks, The Nature Conservancy, and Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, and served as the Assistant Curator/ Lead Horticulturist of the Butterfly Garden at the Museum of Science in Boston, MA.

This program is supported by federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Mass. Board of Library Commissioners.
