Art Reception: Harriet Bernstein

December Art Show at The West Tisbury Library

“The Pink Paintings” — Abstract Art by Harriet Bernstein

West Tisbury, MA – Local artist Harriet Bernstein is bringing joy, love, and a splash of vibrant color to The Island with her latest exhibition, The Pink Paintings. Inspired by her love for the color pink and its meaning as a symbol of love, the collection showcases a series of 24”x24” abstract acrylic paintings that radiate warmth, kindness, and positivity.

Bernstein’s exploration of pink started with a simple idea: to create happiness through color. “I love Pink. It makes me happy,” she says. The series evolved into a deeper mission as she discovered that pink, often overlooked, is the true color of love, while red embodies passion. Through her art, she aims to deliver love to the world, inviting viewers to “Think Pink” and embrace its uplifting energy.

While the collection exudes joy, a touch of darkness threads through some pieces, adding depth and contrast to the rose, blush, and peppermint hues. As Bernstein explains, “My mission is the same: Be kind, Be generous, Be Love.”

About Harriet Bernstein

Harriet Bernstein’s journey into art began in SoHo, New York, during the vibrant art scene of the 1980s. While immersed in improvisational dance, she fell in love with the meditative pastels of Agnes Martin’s canvases, which set the compass for Ms. Bernstein’s own artistic path.

Years later, inspired by the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard and fueled by the stillness of the pandemic, Bernstein began painting at her dining room table. Her passion for pink led her recently to a month-long artist residency in Vermont, where she created a striking 10’x4’ canvas boldly declaring her love for the color.

As Agnes Martin once said, “The attractiveness of artwork is that it is adventurous, strenuous, and joyful,” a sentiment Bernstein embodies wholeheartedly.
