Live Kirtan Music with Bhakti
On Sundays, September 21 and October 19, from 12-1pm, the West Tisbury Library will host live Kirtan music with the island band Bhakti. Kirtan is a form of call-and-response chanting.
Bhakti features yoga instructor and singer/songwriter Rachel Elion Baird on guitar, vocals, and Shruti Box; Jesse Lee on bass; and Justin Meyers on percussion. Chant sheets will be provided, and audience participation is encouraged—including the opportunity to play the Shruti Box.
These events are free and open to the public. All are welcome to come, sing, and share in the joy of music.
Rachel Elion Baird fell in love with Kirtan Music during yoga teacher training many years ago and has studied with Nina Rao as well as frequenting Krishna Das Retreats. Returning from a recent trip to India, she has brought some of the traditional feel of modern Indian chanting as well as added a shruti box to the group’s sound.
Jesse Lee came to Bhakti with a background in metal and lends his precision bass playing and cool NYC vibe to the Bhakti groove.
Justin Meyers first experienced Bhakti as an audience participant at the Milokan Cultural Center, where would pick up a drum and begin to play and chant. They enjoyed Justin’s playing and energy so much that he was invited to join the group. Bhakti’s sound has evolved over the years to mix some contemporary western music influenced originals with more traditional chants.
