Online! Balance: Chi Kung, Yoga & Breath

On Mondays and Fridays at 11:30am, the West Tisbury Library will host an online Balance Series led by Kanta Lipsky. In this class, we will explore ways to strengthen our connection to the earth and increase our bodies’ ability to maintain good balance. No yoga mat needed, but a chair will be necessary for some of the movements. 

Classes will meet virtually through Zoom. All are welcome. Please contact wt_mail@clamsnet.org to sign up. Free and open to the public.

Kanta Lipsky is a massage therapist and yoga teacher. She is also a painter, dancer, and singer who has been exploring alternative forms of healing and well being for many years.

On Monday, May 10 at 7pm, the West Tisbury Library will host its monthly “Writers Read” evening online through Zoom. This event, led by Niki Patton, features community members reading short original prose pieces. Both fiction and nonfiction readings are welcome. Each reader is allotted eight minutes to read. Online Adult Community Dance Class with Jesse Keller Jason

On Wednesdays at 10:30am, the West Tisbury Library presents Adult Community Dance Class through Zoom. This class welcomes adults, seniors, and everyone in between. Jesse Keller Jason makes every(body) feel comfortable in this dance class. The class begins with a guided warm-up that will align the body and introduce dance technique along with building strength, stability, and flexibility. After bodies are warm and energized, participants transition to upbeat movement sequences that keep us socially connected and moving as one. Class will end with a combination that leaves space for the dancers’ own creativity. This class can be done in the comfort of your own home on any surface, seated or standing. Free and open to the public!

Online – Reading Great Modern Novels Study Group

Online: Reading Great Modern Novels Group – Year 3

Please join us for Year Three of the Reading Great Modern Novels Group! This is an informal discussion group of committed readers who want to better understand each book’s history, context, assumptions, and resonance. Free and open to the public. Meets on Zoom.

This group will meet for 90 minutes every two or three Thursdays from January 7 to June 24, 10-11:30am. Group members can expect to read one novel (or its equivalent) every two or three weeks, and members of the group will share responsibility for introducing books and leading discussions. Books can be requested from any of the Island libraries.

Philip Weinstein, a well-known and highly respected literature teacher on our Island and Professor Emeritus at Swarthmore College, is the co-organizer of this discussion group. Phil will not lecture or formally teach the group, but he will be an active member.

The West Tisbury Library invites you to join Shanta Gabriel’s “Empowering Well-Being” class on Zoom. Classes meet on Thursdays from 11:30am-12:30pm. Attend one, some, or all sessions. Class description:

We live in a time when great change and transition fill our lives. 

Strengthening the energetic flow through the body can help create an inner environment of well-being so you can thrive in the midst of change. 

In this class you will receive simple yet profound exercises that will help you feel more aligned and nourished in your daily life. Each class is complete, but they will build on themselves for more calm agility during life’s ongoing change.

Shanta Gabriel is an author and teacher, who has been an energy healer for over 40 years using a variety of modalities to strengthen well-being in daily life.

CLASS FULL! Online Free-Write Poetry Class (series 9)

Starting Thursday, April 15 at 4pm, the West Tisbury Library will host another online Free-Write Poetry Class led by West Tisbury Poet Laureate Spencer Thurlow. In this class, we will do five four-minute free-write sessions. After each session, writers will be encouraged to read their work to the group, but it is not required. A prompt will be given for each free-write so that we all begin with the same line, but of course, after that, writers are free to go in any direction they choose.

Come connect and get creative with us! Classes will meet virtually through Zoom on six Thursdays at 4pm. Class will be limited to five participants. Sign up is required. Please email wt_mail@clamsnet.org. Class dates: 4/15, 4/22, 4/29. 5/6, 5/13, and 5/20. Free and open to the public!

All-Levels Kripalu Flow Class
Virtual Yoga Hosted by the West Tisbury Library

Starting Friday, March 27 at 8am, the West Tisbury Library will host an online all-levels Kripalu Flow Class led by Jason Mazar-Kelly (Yogijay). Classes will meet virtually through Zoom on Fridays at 8am. This class is focused on soothing the nervous system through a combination of movement, breathwork, and meditation. This class is accessible to all levels and is a fun way to wake up while starting the day with a sense of peace in these times of uncertainty. Sign up is required. About the instructor:

Jason is a certified yoga instructor, mindfulness consultant, business consultant, private chef, and CPA. From meditation and breathwork to hot vinyasa and pranic flows, Jason likes to share a variety of tools and techniques with practitioners at all levels. At the age of 12, Jason was diagnosed with severe obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). For the majority of his teenage years he struggled with OCD until finding yoga and mindfulness therapy. The practices he shares are practices he has worked with since 2011. Since 2014, he has shared these practices with communities around New England. His practices have been discovered through personal inquiry as well as through training, research, and mentorships. He will not only challenge you physically but will also challenge you to go deeper, to step into rigorous personal inquiry, and to engage with sensation. Discover the sweetness that comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone and into being fully alive.
