Songs from the Fields with Jim Thomas and the Spirituals Choir
Join us at the West Tisbury Library on Saturday, July 1st from 3-5pm for a concert with Jim Thomas and the Spirituals Choir. This event features songs sung by African slaves in America between 1619 and 1865, along with the stories behind them. They include work songs, songs of hardship, songs of hope, and songs inspired by Bible stories. Questions and comments from the audience are encouraged. All ages are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
Jim Thomas, director of the Spirituals Choir, is founder and president of U.S. Slave Songs Project, of which the choir is a part. A veteran of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, the Robert Shaw Chorale, and the Paul Hill Chorale, he has given presentations about the slave songs in Germany, Brazil, Austria, Sweden, Africa, and various locations across the United States.
