Online Mixed Level ESL Class

Starting Tuesday, May 12 at 2:00 pm, the West Tisbury Library will host a weekly online conversational ESL class with instructor Jonah Kaplan-Woolner. Jonah has been teaching English to speakers of other languages for over 10 years in Massachusetts and New York City. He specializes in guiding students to improve their English in concrete, real-world situations. This class is open to all levels of students: beginner, intermediate or advanced. The class will be organized around discussions that will allow students to improve vocabulary and fluency. There will also be brief grammar lessons, short writing activities, lots of games, and interactive homework assignments. This class is free and open to the public.

Course Outline

Week 1: introductions, icebreakers, working out the kinks in technology, goal-setting for the course, tools to access language (Google images, COBUILD dictionaries, context clues, part of speech, prefix/suffix etc.), professional conversation over phone, email and video chat

  • Grammar/mechanics: asking questions, future tense(s)
  • Writing: my goals, resume practice
  • Speaking: self intros, goals for the class, first letter game, questions game, practice job interview
  • Vocabulary: job interview and professional words

Optional workshop:

Week 2: origin stories, personal writing 

  • Grammar/mechanics: past tense and present perfect tense, subject-verb agreement 
  • Writing: the personal essay
  • Speaking: oral histories, sentence starter game
  • Vocabulary: time words

Week 3: going to the doctor

  • Grammar/mechanics: count and noncount nouns, adjectives 
  • Writing: comparing and contrasting
  • Speaking: doctor’s office role play
  • Vocabulary: medical/doctor words

Week 4: media literacy, introduction to journalism, interview techniques

  • Grammar/mechanics: sentence structure, text features, intro to clauses, simple vs. complex sentences, using quotations
  • Writing: writing a news article/profile
  • Speaking: interview techniques
  • Vocabulary: newspaper words
