Books to Read and Discuss:

Waking Up White by Debby Irving. Debby Irving sensed inexplicable racial tensions in her personal and professional relationships. As a teacher, she found wondering what she was missing. Then, in 2009, one “aha!” moment launched an adventure of discovery and insight that drastically shifted her worldview and upended her life plan. In Waking Up White, Irving tells her often cringe-worthy story with such openness that readers will turn every page rooting for her-and ultimately for all of us.

Faith and Boundaries by Author David Silverman, uses the story of Martha’s Vineyard Wampanoags to examine how it was possible for Indians and Europeans to live peacefully in early America and for Indians to survive as distinct communities. On an island marked by centralized English authority, missionary commitment, and an Indian majority, the Wampanoags’ adaptation to English culture, especially Christianity, checked violence while safeguarding their land, community, and ironically, customs, even as the racial barrier between peoples grew more rigid.

Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. There was a time when ignorance was forgivable. But that time has passed, and hurt people hurt people. Now is the time for healing. And healing begins with introspection and a recognition of our own caste, our own biases, and our own discrimination. This short book peels back the veil and provides a brief glimpse into the history of seven virulent and persistent human biases.
